Introduction

When creating Desktop Music, one of the most difficult things to implement, because of its complexity involved in data input, is that for guitar backing. This is a collection of SMF guitar cuttings to make it easier. SMF stands for Standard MIDI File, a format usable by anyone. Since we have recorded these various guitar cuttings by chord, you can utilize them as backing for your own original songs, or learn data input techniques, or use them any other way you choose.
We are now offering them as shareware but you can expect future development as a cyber session series in the future.

This software has been edited for easy use after data input with MIDI guitar. There will be not be just 6 sounds corresponding to the 6 strings of a guitar. The guitar has its own chord voicing which differs from a keyboard. Therefore, note that if the chord is different, the way to harmonize it is completely different.

We have various kinds of cutting pattern. If you load and play from the first one, you can enjoy about 20 cutting patterns. Two bars are being played per one cutting pattern. In the first bar, they are pitched low, and in the second bar, they are pitched high. These correspond to the low position and high position of a guitar. These cutting patterns are 70 kinds each for 8-beat time, 16-beat time, shuffle-beat time etc.

Since we are offering both SMF files format 0 and 1, you are free to choose either at your convenience. In a MIDI file format 1 form ,which we will note later, 13 kinds of commonly used chords such as major, minor, seventh etc. are allotted to each MIDI channel. Since the chords have been made in a same manner as a real guitarist, you can utilize them as a collection of chord forms. If you find a favorite cutting pattern, just move to the track of the chord name you want (minor, seventh etc.) in the same bar and find the one you want. If you would like to listen to a sample cutting of the chord, mute the other tracks.

The various combinations of multiple cuttings patterns, chord patterns and chord positions adds up to about 2,000 pieces of sound data. Because we are utilizing GM/GS sound module, we have input program change information. As they are very simple, if you can utilize SMF, it is possible to enjoy GM/GS sound resource as samples with all MIDI instruments.

Data Form

This software, standard MIDI file in DOS form, has been compressed in ZIP or LHA formats(extension is .lzh), and can be downloaded. After you download the file, decompress it before use.

If you are a Macintosh user, after you decompress the file with MacLHA or MacGzip, convert it with either Apple File Exchange or PC Exchange (either of which should be attached to your system), and change the file type to "Midi". Since the file type which has been converted with Apple File Exchange or PC Exchange is "TEXT" or "BINA", it may be not readable with Macintosh sequencer software. The file type for SMF data should be "Midi", so change the file type as follows:

  1. Open the "Get File Info" of ResEdit and change the type to "Midi".
  2. Change the file type to "Midi" with general type changing utility such as File Typery, File Buddy, or exclusive type changing utility such as MIDI File Converter or Midi It!.

In case of (2), we especially recommend Midi It! as the easiest for converted files into the "Midi" format. After you make sure that a file is SMF, you can easily change the file type with Midi It!.

When you load SMF data, refer to your hardware sequencer or sequencer software manual you have.

Differences between SMF format 0 and 1

Format 0 is a file which has been saved in a single track form, for ease of play.
Format 1 is a file which has been saved in a multi-track form. As this has been saved separately by track, if you have proffesional sequence software(i.e. with multi-track sequencer capability), it is possible to edit them freely by checking the track names and muting them by track.

In format 0, as it is incapable of displaying letters, we allotted the files by chord name.
Multi-track files such as CUT8BET.MID, CUT 16BET.MID 3REN.MID are unified as follows;

01TRMIDI 10 CH RHYTHM SET
02TRMIDI 01CH BASS
03TRMIDI 02CH A7
04TRMIDI 04CH A major 7
06TRMIDI 05CH A minor

Bars

Two bars are being played per one cutting pattern. In the first bar, they are pitched low, and in the second bar, they are pitched high. These correspond to the low position and high position of a guitar.

When you input them, they will mostly be transposed. It would be unnatural for a guitar with the same voicing to transpose +-6. To avoid this, we have 2 ways to play as guitarists do.

All files with the same number of bars have the same cutting pattern. Save the chord you need and use it.

NEXT BACK INDEX

CUTAGT.MID

This is a version for acoustic guitar. We input the program number 25 for timbre in the beginning of the track. Though the cutting for the electric guitar(PG/No.27) has been produced with 4 voices, we made CUTAGT.MID with 5 or 6 voices to make it more acoustic guitar like.

BACK INDEX

Epilogue

This software has been produced with the concept in mind that the real fascination of Desktop music is the chance to take part in and edit the works.

For example: If you are a beginner, after you repeat Aminor three times and tranpose Aminor key +5 and then repeat it once, you can produce your own guitar backing work easily. Even if you are a veteran user, to make guitar cutting data from scratch is probably troublesome. This software exists to make things easier.
We set the timebase 48 for easier editing in this software, if you a skilled sequence software user, why don't you try to use your techniques such as randomizing them so that you can then more lively and full of expression.
Users who phrase sampled using CD for sampler until now could not transpose. However, using the ability to change key, which is one of the great advantages of this software, you will be able to broaden your creative output.

In addition to your opinions, if you have a request such as you want a certain kind of MIDI software, please don't hesitate to ask us, THANK YOU.
